Overview
From the first century to today, the Church has been God’s instrument to move the world, not through force, but through love.
Missionaries carried the gospel across continents, often bringing literacy, education, healthcare, and justice with them. Where the good news spread, dignity was restored and hope took root.
True faith does not remain private; it produces visible fruit in acts of love.
Matthew 28:19 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”

The Missional Heart of God
God’s mission has always been global. From Genesis to Revelation, His desire is to redeem people from every nation.
The Church was never called to dominate culture but to transform it through truth, humility, and sacrificial love.
Early believers spread the gospel through everyday faithfulness, through work, relationships, and testimony.
Acts 1:8 – “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses… to the ends of the earth.”
The Great Missionary Movements
Patrick of Ireland – 5th Century
Once enslaved by the Irish, Patrick returned to bring the gospel to his captors. His mission transformed a pagan culture into a center of Christian learning and art. The Celtic Church he founded later helped re-evangelize Europe after the fall of Rome.
Patrick’s courage reminds us that the gospel calls us not to safety but to faith-filled obedience.
The Moravians – 18th Century
In Herrnhut, Germany, a small community launched a 100-year prayer meeting and the first organized Protestant missionary movement. Spiritual descendants of Jan Hus, the pre-reformation reformer.
Their motto was:
“To win for the Lamb that was slain the reward of His suffering.”
Their faith and sacrifice inspired generations of missionaries who followed.
William Carey – 18th-19th Century
A humble shoemaker turned pastor, Carey went to India where he translated the Bible into multiple languages, founded schools for girls, and fought social injustices such as sati, the burning of widows.
His motto still challenges us today:
“Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”
Carey labored seven years before his first convert, reminding us that God measures faithfulness, not success.
Hudson Taylor – 19th Century
Founder of the China Inland Mission, Taylor focused on reaching unreached people in China’s interior. He immersed himself in Chinese culture, learned the language, and lived among the people he served.
His approach of cultural sensitivity became a model for future missions.
Taylor said:
“All God’s giants have been weak men who did great things for God because they reckoned on God being with them.”
His life reminds us that God delights in using ordinary people who completely depend on Him.
Ministry and Social Reform – Love Made Visible
The gospel doesn’t just change hearts; it changes lives and communities.
George Müller – 19th Century
Cared for over 18,000 orphans through prayer and trust in God’s provision. His life became a living testimony to Philippians 4:19 and showed how deeply God cares for the vulnerable.
Prison Fellowship
Founded by Chuck Colson to bring restorative justice and hope to prisoners and their families. Colson reminded believers that true transformation comes through the gospel, not politics.
Joni and Friends
Founded by Joni Eareckson Tada to serve people with disabilities and their families. Her story demonstrates how God can transform suffering into ministry and hope.
Victor Marx
Founder of All Things Possible Ministries, a “high-risk” ministry rescuing widows, orphans, and victims of trafficking in dangerous regions of the Middle East.
His courage is a living picture of Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:28.
Countless others continue to make God’s love visible through compassion, courage, and service. Many of their stories began in heartache – yet our suffering is sacred in the hands of God. He uses our pain for our shaping and to reveal His redemptive purpose in ministry.
The Church on the Move
The Church is not a building; it is a living movement.
God calls some to go across the world, but He calls all believers to live missionally right where they are.
Every place becomes a mission field when we walk in obedience.
Romans 10:15 – “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”
Guided Reflection
Let the Holy Spirit guide you through these four questions:

- What is evil that you can stand against?
- What is missing that you can help provide?
- What is broken that you can help restore?
Every mission effort and ministry answers one or more of these questions.
